Coral Workshop For Best Of UK Festival Held By British Council

Coral gave a little workshop for the #BestOfUK festival at Epicentrum walk held by British Council last Saturday. It was actually my first experience in giving workshop, hopefully everybody was happy. All the participants may bring home the lamp and cushion they have made so, I believe they were quite happy.

E-idea Competition

Alhamdulillah, Coral. has been chosen as one of 24 finalists for E-idea competion from British Council together with LRQA. We were quarantined for 3 days at Atlet Century Hotel, met awsome finalists from all over the country and inspiring fabulous speakers, and also done some workshops...whoa, superb!

If just you would read the ideas that they proposed and compare it with their ages, you would definitely be stunned! Seriously, if you see what they do you'll be absolutely optimist for this Country! You can read the finalist's profiles on British Council facebook page here.

I felt so small between those finalists at the beginning, but then I'm more to feel blessed, so very blessed to meet this extraordinary inventors. They dream for a change, they plan their dreams then take action! They are the doers, the change makers, the act takers. Yes, I am so honored and lucky to meet these people. :)

I hope Coral. can also make positive acts together with them as well. Ameen.

Anyway, I'd like to congrats to the winners. Congratulations!!!!

Sampah Plastik Ancam Kehidupan Paus

KOMPAS.com — Jutaan ton sampah plastik yang dibuang ke laut tiap tahunnya menghadirkan ancaman serius bagi paus. Detail dari kesimpulan itu akan diungkapkan dalam sebuah forum kelautan internasional yang berlangsung pada 11 hingga 14 Juli 2011 di Jersey, Inggris.

Sebagai contoh, pada 2008, dua paus sperma yang terdampar di pesisir California, AS, memiliki 205 kilogram jaring ikan dan serpihan sampah plastik dalam tubuhnya. Seekor di antaranya memiliki perut yang rusak. Seekor lainnya, dalam kondisi kelaparan, memiliki banyak sampah plastik yang menghalangi saluran pencernaannya.

Tujuh paus sperma yang terdampar di selatan Italia pada tahun 2009 juga didapati telah menelan kail, tali, dan obyek-obyek plastik lainnya. Seekor paus lain, yang ditemukan tewas di perairan Perancis pada 2002, bahkan telah menelan hampir satu ton sampah, termasuk kantong plastik dari dua supermarket terkenal di Inggris.

"Paus Cuvier di kawasan utara Atlantik tampaknya yang paling sering didapati menelan dan mati karena kantong plastik," kata Mark Simmonds, anggota Scientific Committee of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) yang menuliskan laporan tersebut.

Sayangnya, peneliti kesulitan untuk memastikan seluruh populasi paus yang terancam oleh masalah ini. "Di banyak kawasan di dunia, bangkai paus yang terdampar tidak dicatat dan diperiksa. Sayangnya, di kawasan tempat paus yang terdampar dicatat, pemeriksaan terhadap benda-benda yang ditelan jarang dilakukan," kata Chris Parsons, biolog kelautan dari George Mason University, Virginia, AS.

Para pakar menyebutkan, sebagian besar paus yang mati akibat menelan sampah atau alat-alat penangkap ikan umumnya tenggelam ke dasar laut.

Meski jarang didata, terdapat bukti-bukti bahwa sampah plastik di laut bisa membahayakan paus. Peneliti menyebutkan bahwa bukti-bukti ini perlu segera diselidiki lebih lanjut.

"Kami belum mengetahui sampah laut berada di peringkat berapa dalam daftar ancaman dibandingkan ancaman lain. Namun, dengan semakin banyaknya sampah di samudra, sampah plastik akan menjadi ancaman yang semakin besar," kata Simmonds. (National Geographic Indonesia/Abiyu Pradipa)
